Kyren

Kyren is an administrative centre of Tunkinsky region. About 5500 people live here, it is the largest settlement of this area. The settlement got its name from the Buryat word "hirehe “, which means a raven, a ravens’ place. Another version states that this toponym originated from a Samodian word "kir” or "kiri” - the name of one of Samodian tribes. Kyren is situated on the motorway Kultuk - Mondy. The distance from Kyren to Ulan-Ude is 490 kms, and from Kyren to Irkutsk is 215 kms.

Nowadays Kyren is a modern and developing settlement. All state and municipal offices governing in the region are located here. Among them are the municipal formation "Tunkinsky region"and the Administration of State national park " Tunkinsky”. Also there are some shops, cafes, dining-rooms, a post-office, a bus station, a regional local lore museum, a museum of a history of foundation, search and rescue service of the Ministry of Emergency Measures of the Russian Federation, a gasoline station, workshop tyre-assembling, militia, a regional hotel, a hospital, a club, a Buddhist datsan, an Orthodox church and the branch of the Savings Bank. The settlement has an airport, but it does not accept planes now, and is used basically for service of the helicopters making flights for investigation of forest fires, conducting search and rescue works, and taking tourists to Shumak.

Kyren has prospects of development as the main administrative centre of management of the development of tourism and the transit centre on a perspective tourist direction of Baikal - Khubsugul (Mongolia). In settlement there are also some objects that attract travelers.

Two departments are responsible for the development of tourism: the department of tourism of Management of social policy in the Municipal formation "Tunkinsky region" and the department of recreation in the State national park " Tunkinsky”. This development is carried out on the ground of the Regional aimed complex program of development of tourism adopted in 2004 in Tunkinsky region for 2004-2008 years.
