Seiche
These are vertical waves of the Baikal. They are formed with driving water wind. During the process the level of water falls at one shore and rises at the other. Then a compensating leveling happens and thus it occurs several times. Thus due to the process the whole of the Baikal surface fluctuates in wave rhythm. The period of full fluctuation of Seishi ranges from one to several hours. Also vertical waves are caused by the difference of the atmospheric pressure over different parts of the lake and underwater seismic shocks. Seishi also take place in winter under water.
Ebbs and Flows of the Baikal
They are not as big as they are at seas and are nor-mally unnoticeable for the eye since the size of the fluctuation level is only 2-3 sm. But their origin is the same as of marine ebbs and flows, and particularly both of them are effected by the interaction of gravity force of the Moon and that of the Sun.
Mirages
Mirages happen normally at the Baikal in summer during strong heat. In the heated air there appear mirages of the surrounding mountains, ship, villages and other things. They are more often observed on the Goloustnaya river, the north-eastern part of the Olkhon Island, at the Solnechny cape and the Bolshoi Ushkany Isle. There are 2-6 days with mirages a year and in some years one can see 16 of such phenomena.
The Baikal glitter is a special glistening of the lake water in the sun that happens in summer during absolute calm. The water at this moment looks like molten glass.
